Welcome

European society, especially in the counties of southern Europe, is suffering as one of the gravest consequences of the economic crisis: high levels of youth unemployment. The current situation, with an unemployment rate of more than 22% among those below 25 years of age across half of Europe, is unsustainable, and, if not addressed quickly, could validate the name that some have already given this “lost generation”.

In the interest of putting a stop to this social issue, the European Commission has initiated the Plan of Guarantee for Youth. This new initiative is designed to fight against youth unemployment, and hopes to guarantee that all youth under 25 years of age receive a solid job offer of good quality within 4 months of finishing their training or of the beginning of their period of unemployment.

Beginning from this social context, this project will provide tools, studies, and other measures that will help us to understand the current situation and to improve the employability of these youth, especially young women.

This project’s partnership of organisations defend the idea of a more social and cohesive Europe, dedicated to its citizens, in which the social economy and stable, quality employment for youths is a general norm and not an exception.

To this end, the objective of this project is to analyse the reality of the youth job market at the European level and to offer tools that permit young women to improve their employability and to foment their social initiative.

The programme will offer a training and information service and comprehensive assistance to provide young women with diverse tools to improve their employability and their capacity for social initiative. The programme also hopes to strengthen the developmental model of workers’ cooperatives, in this way providing advice in the face of the violation of worker’ rights and granting the backing of syndicate organisations, etc.

Furthermore, the programme will create a strategic alliance of organisations that work toward the equality of young men and women in the job market and for stable and quality employment. These will organise the characteristics of the job market, the principle causes of inequality and discrimination, the implementation of the Plan of Guarantee for Youth, etc. They will also put to those responsible for the taking of political decisions, who cannot forget their fundamental role in fomenting stable and quality employment, the responsibility of recognising women and social movements.

A comparative study of the reality of the job markets of different European countries, centred specifically on the reality for young women, (how “precarity” affects determined groups, principle legislative changes like the Plan of Guarantee for Youth, effects of policies of labour conciliation on young women, etc.) will produce a series of conclusions and recommendations that will be passed to the European Parliament and other interested parties to improve the implementation of the Plan of Guarantee for Youth.

The project will also include a digital platform in which a variety of tools for training, information, and assistance of youth in search of employment, who hope to bring about initiatives within the social economy, or who suffer the violation of their labour rights, will be available. This platform and its materials will be based on the innovation and the use of Information and Communications Technologies, creating attractive and quality materials like training videos, interactive materials, etc.

Once developed, these intellectual products will be diffused on a massive scale by means of the European and national networks to which participating organisations belong. These will also be brought to the attention of politicians, and will aid in the organisation of many events in Madrid.

A cordial salutation,

José María González Suarez.- President of the FEC

Adoración Guamán. – Director of the FEC
